I went to Goeppinger Field to watch the Boone High Toreadors play Ballard-Huxley. It was about 70 degrees when headed there with my son and his wife. This old man took along his winter coat and about 8:30 the wind shifted and the temp dropped to about 52,was I glad I had my coat, yet there we kids in tee shirts and girls with short tops and shorts.

Well after fighting those bleachers, all new ones, only thing the same about Goepinger Field is location and layout. I looked up to see team come on field led by cheerleaders-Pete Schroeder, Willie Piper, Alan Smiley, Doty Schultz and Lil Buechler. I stood as new fight song was played, looked up and there was no. 12-Tom Grimes,23-Jim Sturtz, 15-Roger Orr, 33-Ray Mestagh, 13-Dominick Belmonte, 25- Jay Mallas,40-Bob Van De Woestine,21-Jock Welin,48=Jim Littell,28-Wayne Van Ness,66-Chuck Fangman,14-Jim Emerson,22- Chuck Denning,25-Bob Reed, 34--Bill Currel,46-Bob McCormick,30-Bob Lee and the rest of team followed by managers Ralph Jones and Skimoni Anderson. And yes, behind them came Baldus, Stutzman and Gluenken or maybe that was Elslager, the coaches. I was enjoying seeing all the uniforms, white pants and Red tops while Ballard had white top and red pants. This old man got confused a few times and then I came out of my trance to reality when my Granddaughter, Ashlee Moorman, a Cheer leader came up and gave me a big hug. Then I remembered I came to watch her as one of the cheer leaders. I never did here the Boone High fight song, words or tune. I did look around and could find a few familiar faces but not many. Anyway, that was my trip to Goepinger field after many years not going to games-Memories, yes, memories and hope this brings back a few for you.

To those who had not heard on school election, the bond went through and Boone will have a new high school. The new school for senior high will be to East covering most of Blair Park and old school as we know it will be demolished and new freshman school will be there.

And to top all this the game was a very good game and better yet because Boone won-35-20. For those wondering Ballard-Huxley, the CIC as we knew it is no more. We have been in several conferences, all determined by population of school enrollment. Enough rambling, if you enjoy please let me know, otherwise nothing.

Enjoy, I hope, and keep in touch. God Bless

                                                                                                Vern

LaVerne (Swede) Odin's Obituary - June 10, 2011

http://booneiowasoca.manriquez.net/news-update-blog/laverne-swede-odins-obituary-june-10-2011

http://booneiowasoca.manriquez.net/news-update-blog/laverne-swede-odins-obituary-june-10-2011#comments

Uncategorized

LaVerne “Swede” Odin, age 94, of Long Beach, California, passed away June 10, 2011.
