The History of the Boone Iowa Society of Southern California

For 97 years people have met as Californian's, old and young, all with a common thread, which was that they all lived in or near Boone, Iowa at one time.
Three former Boone residents founded the Society. Mayme Clapp Howeth was a young woman when she attended a party at the home of Ella DeTar Wanty in Pasadena, Calif., in 1913. Both ladies along with Charles M. Campbell, organized the Boone Iowa Society of Southern California. Only 5 people attended the first meeting, which was held in Pasadena in 1914. Since then the meeting place has changed from Los Angeles, Long Beach and finally in 1971, to our current site in Buena Park.

Boone Iowa

Boone is located northwest of Des Moines, and has a population of approximately 13,000. Boone was named for Capitan Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, a member of the U.S. Dragoons. He marched through the territory on June 23, 1835, and camped about three miles east of the current town. With the completion of the railroad in 1865, Boone sprang into existence, although Boone County had been established since 1847. Boone is known as the birthplace of Mame Doud Eisenhower and the Boone Scenic Railroad.
